Preliminary studies for Tehran-Shomal freeway project has been started from 1353 (1973). Afterwards a competition was held to find a good plan for this project and the current plan was chosen the best one.
This project is mainly to provide a faster and cheaper route for connecting central district of the country to its northern district. This freeway is a part of nationwide freeway from south to north which is the shortest connecting route from Persian Gulf to Caspian Sea and has the main role in transit. Another important role of construction of this freeway is easiness to access to the northern neighbors.
